Colonization

Definition: The presence and growth of a microorganism, such as antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB), on a host without causing disease. Colonized individuals can act as transmitters of the micororganisms. Related to nosocomial infections and bacterial characteristics – carriage duration.
Synonyms: Host colonization, microbial presence.
